The short answer
CRCST and CSPDT are two established entry credentials for sterile processing technicians. The decisive difference is the route to certification. HSPA requires 400 documented hands-on hours for full CRCST status, either before the exam or within six months after passing as a provisional candidate. CBSPD accepts several routes to its CSPDT exam, including a qualifying training course. Your first move is to inspect local job postings for the credential employers name, then choose the eligibility path you can complete.

Choose CRCST when the supervised-hours route fits
If you work in an SPD, the 400 hours may turn ordinary supervised practice into the required credential evidence. HSPA allocates 120 hours each to decontamination, preparation and packaging, and sterilization and disinfection; 24 to storage and distribution; and 16 to quality assurance. Your supervisor must document the work. Plan the rotation early, especially if your department does not expose every technician to all five areas. A candidate without hours can test provisionally, but must complete and submit them within six months of passing.
CRCST exam preparation can come from work, self-study, or a course. HSPA explicitly says a preparatory course is optional. Choose CSPDT when its eligibility route matches your background
CBSPD’s four routes make the CSPDT path useful to more than one kind of applicant. A technician with a year of SPD work can qualify through employment; an allied-health worker can combine six months in that field with six months of SPD work; a qualifying technician course can independently meet the training route; and related healthcare product sales or service has its own route. The application asks you to document the route you select. The exam is offered in defined one-week windows, so your study plan should run backward from the published deadline.

Make the choice in four checks
- Read ten technician postings in your target area. Record whether each says CRCST, CSPDT, either credential, or certification within a set time.
- Map your current experience and training against each credential body’s eligibility page. For CRCST, identify who can sign off your five hour categories.
- Price the whole path: exam, materials or course, travel to testing, and renewal. The published exam fee is only one part of the cost.
- Select a test date and build a study plan from that body’s current content outline. Keep application forms and supervisor records together.
Pick the credential that meets your target employer’s language and has a documented path you can finish.
