How to Become a Sterile Processing Technician

Choose the credential path first

Two common U.S. entry credentials are HSPA’s CRCST and CBSPD’s CSPDT. Their eligibility rules differ. HSPA requires 400 hours of documented hands-on SPD experience for full CRCST status, which can be completed before the exam or within six months after passing under provisional status. CBSPD offers several eligibility routes, including qualifying work experience or completion of an SPD training course. Read the current rules from the credentialing body before paying for a program.

Get close to the work

Look for trainee, technician, or volunteer opportunities in hospital sterile processing departments and surgery centers. Ask whether the site can rotate you through decontamination, prep and pack, sterilization, storage, and quality assurance. For HSPA, the 400 hours must be documented by an authorized supervisor in specified categories; an online course by itself does not supply them.

Learn the full reprocessing sequence

Build knowledge from the device IFU and the department workflow, not isolated memorized facts. Understand why cleaning precedes disinfection or sterilization, how instruments are inspected and assembled, how packaging and monitoring protect the process, and how records link a finished set to a patient. A current course or the HSPA manual can provide the structure; supervised work makes the sequence real.

Prepare for the exam you will take

For CRCST, use the current HSPA content outline and 9th-edition technical manual as the reference base. Add questions to identify weak domains and take a timed mock late in your plan. For CSPDT, use CBSPD’s current candidate bulletin and study guide, which maps to its own exam outline. Do not assume the two tests have identical eligibility or content weights.

Apply with proof ready

Keep dates, hours, supervisor details, course completion records, and exam application deadlines together. Verify the required forms and fees directly with HSPA or CBSPD when you apply. A clear record makes the transition from learner to certified technician much smoother.
